North Wilts Group “Highly Commended”

In the inaugural RoADAR awards, North Wiltshire’s submission was Highly Commended by the judging panel. We didn’t win any of the awards, but were one of only a few groups to receive this separate commendation. The judging panel said they:

” … were particularly impressed with the Group’s focus on the two Key Target Groups. Mature Riders and Newly Qualified Young Drivers. ”

“Your entry which was very professionally presented, clearly illustrated a lively, creative dedicated group with a range of pro-active ideas, who no doubt will go from strength to strength.”

Well done to Tony Wilkes who put our presentation together, and all those who contributed materials.

Our first Life member, Chris Gleed

At our AGM earlier this month, Chris Gleed was elected to Life Membership of the Group. Chris was a founder member of the Group (his membership number is 3), and has held many offices within the Group over the years including Car Training Officer and Chairman. Here he is being presented with a certificate by Chairman Nick Carrington

Get Smart! is nearly go!

North Wiltshire RoADAR’s joint campaign with Wiltshire Police is nearly off the drawing board onto the street. The campaign leaflet is designed, and awaiting approval by senior Police management. When it’s ready to roll, we’ll post more. Watch this space…

Downtime 22/23-Aug-2011

Yesterday and today our host have had some issues with their servers which has caused our site to be offline. Hopefully all is resolved now. Apologies for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

What went wrong?

If you’re interested, here’s the story:

Sunday 22nd May 06:39 – 1and1 domain registration for Northwiltsroadar.co.uk expires. 1and1 delete the domain from their database and de-tag it (a bit like taking the number off your house so nobody can find it any more).

Monday 23rd May 09:28 – log a call with the hosting company asking what’s wrong (no idea of the domain de-tagging at this stage)

10:24 – host advises domain is gone

10:24 – email the owner of the domain asking if he knows what’s up

further email exchanges over the next day establish we have no current credentials to log into the domain registrar website and check for ourselves.

Tuesday 24th May 19:45 – log support call with 1and1 (the registrar)

Wednesday 25th May 08:22 – answer from 1and1 – your domain has been deleted – immediately reply asking why we were not notified

11:30 – continue to pursue through the hosting company who are very helpful and contact Nominet on our behalf

Start the process of authenticating with Nominet to get the partial domain transfer we kicked off 2 years ago completed.

13:09 – send out initial email to members informing them of the outage

22:10 – reply from 1and1 – your domain has been cancelled – reply asking what next

22:40 – reply from 1and1 – you will have to contact Nominet – reply asking how to escalate

23:13 – reply from 1and1 asking for further details

Thursday 26th May 09:12 – email 1and1 with account details

19:13 – first indication that email to members didn’t get to all

19:21 – reply from 1and1 – package cancelled, contact billing dept – email billing dept. asking for info and advising I will call on Friday

20:00 to 21:00 – emailing members manually a few at a time to advise of the situation.

21:04 – reply from 1and1 (same person as before) – yes we can assist you, call this number – gaaaahhhhh!!!!

Friday 27th May a.m. – call number – tech support – ask to speak to billing – transferred to new person – can’t help, transferred to sales (in Philadelphia where it’s 4:30 am). Very helpful, sells me new package (new, unneeded domain, but only way to get new account), and advises me to call support to get old domain transferred .

Later – package active – call support (now in India). Advised to start transfer process but that then I will need to contact Nominet for re-tagging.

Call Nominet – very helpful but domain is registered to A.N.Other, who will have to authorise the transfer. Email A.N.O. with instructions – but he’s away for the weekend.

Tue 31st May a.m. – previous owner comes back from long weekend and immediately swings into action with the identification required. Hurrah!

15:59  - email from Nominet – access granted – call back and ask for assistance. Still v. helpful, we start domain transfer process. Several calls later it’s transferred. Now for re-tagging. Won’t allow re-tagging from existing account. Create new account.

16:48 – email from Nominet – transfer complete – yay!

Tue p.m. – return to 1and1 site and wait for tag to activate. Continue waiting ….

Wed a.m. – tag is active – woohoo!  Update nameserver entries to point to web host. Wait for DNS entries to propagate.

Wed p.m. – DNS starts to filter through – website is alive again! Phew!

So the moral is, don’t let your domain expire!!

We’re back!

The website is back. I’ve also linked the News page to Notes on Facebook so news will appear in both places. Check out the Facebook page.

If you have items of news, there’s now a new place to add them. Just ask Nick.

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY!!

Group Meeting at Blunsdon House Hotel on Wednesday November 4th at 7.30pm

I have managed to obtain the services of Chris Gilbert, (Roadcraft/Hendon), as our Speaker for the above meeting. As most of you know, Chris is a very prolific and entertaining speaker who, from my experience, encourages enthusiasm. Chris played a very big part many years ago in helping me determine how far I wanted to be involved with Advanced Driving and he was indeed a great mentor for me and I will always be grateful for that!

His talk will be for about 2 hours with a break half way through and will cover as much as possible about his Driving History, Roadcraft and the principles within it and also some information about “Response Driving”.

His”Ultimate Driving Craft” DVD will be available at a reduced price for the night so it will be worth coming along to take advantage of that offer.

Obviously Chris has a fair way to travel to speak to us and we need to cover the costs involved in obtaining speakers like Chris so please, do yourselves a great favour and come along to take advantage of his talk and go away enlightened with the fact that you will possess more knowledge than you came in with.

I have been to a considerable number of Chris’s talks and I have learned from each of them. I have never been bored and I could easily have sat there until the dawn. Each talk has something different!

So please make the effort to back up your Committee and fellow members. I would like to ask you to try to obtain any support you can from anyone who may be interested in coming along.

Make a note of those questions you always wanted to ask!!!!

Looking forward to your attendance and support.

Chris Gleed. MAIRSO.
